  15. <p>     DIED. FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY, 88, President of the Ivory Coast;
  16. in Yamoussoukro. The longest-serving leader in Africa, Houphouet-Boigny
  17. took charge of the Ivory Coast in 1960, when it won independence
  18. from France. Though criticized as dictatorial, he was popular
  19. for much of his rule, developing a strong economy and keeping
  20. peace among the country's many ethnic groups by creating a sense
  21. of nationhood.
