- <p> DIED. FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY, 88, President of the Ivory Coast;
- in Yamoussoukro. The longest-serving leader in Africa, Houphouet-Boigny
- took charge of the Ivory Coast in 1960, when it won independence
- from France. Though criticized as dictatorial, he was popular
- for much of his rule, developing a strong economy and keeping
- peace among the country's many ethnic groups by creating a sense
- of nationhood.
